After the Amstel Gold Race, there were doubts about Jelle’s knee. In the Amstel his knee was hit badly in a crash, which still caused a lot of pain in the following days. Despite the knee pain, Jelle had again a very good day.
Early in the race there was a breakaway of three riders, Jonathan Clarke, Ramunas Navardauskas, and Preben Van Hecke. The breakaway became, just as in the Amstel Gold Race, a serious lead whit a maximum of 8 min 45.
Early in the race Dennis Vanendert crashed unfortunately, and suffered all day. He did a great job to help his teammates. During the second climb of the Mur de Huy he was too far at the back of the peloton and lost some time. Tim Wellens worked hard for his teammates at the front of the group.
The decision came on the final climb of the Mur de Huy. Jelle was very well positioned at the front of the peloton and attacked at 300 meters from the finish. Jelle can be very satisfied with his sixth place.
