11th place Jelle Vanendert in Liege Bastogne Liege

Monday, April 28, 2014. Dennis and Jelle Vanendert performed again extremely good. In Liege Bastogne Liege became Jelle 11th and Dennis showed himself in the final of the race at the front.

Early in the race, there was a lead group of six men with Bono, Jacobs, Koch, Long, Minnaard, and Venter. They reached a lead of more than fifteen minutes, while Sander Armée controlled the peloton for Lotto - Belisol. The breakaway persisted long. At La Redoute, the leading group still had a lead of two and a half minutes.

On the Côte des Forges started the first attacks from the peloton, Dennis Vanendert tried to follow an attack. This escape was quickly taken back by the peloton. Jelle Vanendert was also at the front of the peloton and tried to attack constantly. Arredondo and Pozzovivo managed to take a lead.

The two leaders were caught at 11 Kilometre from the finish. On the Côte de Saint - Nicolas Pozzovivo tried again with Caruso. They were taken back in the last kilometre. Daniel Martin, the winner of last year, also seemed to be winning again this year, but crashed in the last corner. Simon Gerrans finally finished first followed by Valverde and Kwiatkowski. Jelle was 11th at 8 seconds.

Jelle Vanendert at Lotto -Belisol: "I am satisfied with this result, I have done everything to pursue the best possible outcome. In the final I tried to jump away, but you need the right riders to follow you. The riders who also attacked didn’t work together and the peloton didn’t hesitate. I'm not as explosive as Gerrans , Gilbert or Valverde. It was my intention for the final climb to Ans to attack with a group of my type of riders. From La Roche-aux -Faucons I rode very offensive. I tried to take an initiative for seven times,. unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay away."

"The breakaway had to over fifteen minutes ahead. This meant that the race remained closed for a long time, but the pace was steadily increased which made it impossible to open the race early. I am very satisfied with my performance in the Ardennes Classics. I've lived here very hard going. I'm glad I did well. Now I will discuss with the team what my next goals will be."
